ICQ
has released a new version of ICQ5. This one is called ICQ5.1 and its
build is 2573. Along with the version increment, there are a few
noticeable changes to this client. I will outline a few of them below.
|
|
On
the login screen, there's a drop-down menu that allows the user to
select the status before logging in, from among the away, N/A and
Invisible status. This security features matches those found in other
messengers.
|
|
The
contact list has a few changes. The large bulky buttons that in prior
version provided access to the Preferences menu have been replaced by a
standard menu bar. Along side the status change bar is found a button
that allows quick access to the SMS send functionality. Next to that is
a heart icon button that brings up a few service called Instant Match
(see below).
|
On the message window we find a button labeled tZers.
This brings up a menu from which one can select an animated clip to
send. I think we've seen these kinds of animated clips on Yahoo
Messenger.
|
These
are the emoticons in ICQ5.1 build 2573. Hate 'em or love 'em... you
can't change 'em. Or can you? I dunno, I think Kid makes the best
emoticons (;
|
ICQ has for a while now been promoting some of their match making services (remember all those These people got married after meeting on ICQ!
ads?). Now the match making service is built into the client, with a
twist. Now you can rate the people on your contact list based on a
romance scale. This is done in secret and if each party rate the other
high, a "love match" results. See the description in the screenshot for
details. You can also see in the screenshot that I rated Alex2001 with
a 100% romance rating. Supposedly tomorrow he'll be notified that he
has a secret admirer (but now he'll know it's ME! tee-hee :)

As seen on Nafcom's Crap Blog!, ICQ appears to be developing a super secret messaging client called ComPad. Okay, it's not so secret as the website explains that it works by "all you have to do to send a message is write the name of the person and ComPad will find him / her, for you." It sounds like a sort of Internet pager to me.
Access
to the service is restricted at this time. When I tried to download the
product I was informed that Canadian users couldn't download it. Then I
went and downloaded the client from the ftp.icq.com server. I was able to install the product, but when I tried to obtain a "ComPad ID," I was informed that "Sorry, users from Canada cannot sign-up to ComPad."
ICQ also has an interesting section of their website called ICQ Labs
where alpha and beta stage products will be posted for testing and
download. So watch this page often! I've already got my "web page
checker" app monitoring this site!
